IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliance Handbook

IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliance Handbook

This is absolutely the best guide to learning and using IBM’s DataPower devices available. The technical documentation from IBM is good for a terse, technical reference to specific features of the devices, but those documents are definitely NOT tutorials or self-study courses. The DataPower Handbook, on the other hand, provides a gentle, comprehensive guide to learning to use DataPower effectively.

The book is divided into several sections which are geared toward different interested parties. There is a wealth of information in there for administrators, network architects, security architects, and, of course, firewall developers.

This is, hands-down, one of the best technical books I have ever owned. It is so good, in fact, that we went ahead and purchased three copies for use within the company.

Oh– one additonal point: I’m not sure if it’s mentioned in the book, but there is an online forum for DataPower users that is also an excellent resource. The forum is located here:

[...]

And one final gripe: I really wish that the original DataPower designers had chosen to call the XML processing pipelines something other than a “firewall.” That name totally confuses everyone I talk to. Oh well….

IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliance Handbook Overview

Expert Guide to Deploying, Using, and Managing DataPower SOA Appliances

IBM® WebSphere® DataPower® appliances can simplify SOA deployment, strengthen SOA security, enhance SOA performance, and dramatically improve SOA return on investment. In this book, a team of IBM’s leading experts show how to make the most of DataPower SOA appliances in any IT environment.

The authors present IBM DataPower information and insights that are available nowhere else. Writing for working architects, administrators, and security specialists, they draw extensively on their deep experience helping IBM customers use DataPower technologies to solve challenging system integration problems.

IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliance Handbook begins by introducing the rationale for SOA appliances and explaining how DataPower appliances work from network, security, and Enterprise Service Bus perspectives. Next, the authors walk through DataPower installation and configuration; then they present deep detail on DataPower’s role and use as a network device.

Using many real-world examples, the authors systematically introduce the services available on DataPower devices, especially the “big three”: XML Firewall, Web Service Proxy, and Multi-Protocol Gateway. They also present thorough and practical guidance on day-to-day DataPower management, including, monitoring, configuration build and deploy techniques.

Coverage includes

•  Configuring DataPower’s network interfaces for common scenarios

•  Implementing DataPower deployment patterns for security gateway, ESB, and Web service management applications

•  Proxying Web applications with DataPower

•  Systematically addressing the security vulnerabilities associated with Web services and XML

•  Integrating security with WebSphere Application Server

•  Mastering DataPower XSLT custom programming

•  Troubleshooting using both built-in and external tools

Outsource Your Data Headaches With On Site Data Destruction Service

Security concerns not only for individuals and companies but for the culpability of Information Officers for having procedures in place, are forcing more and more companies of all sizes to be more responsible for the information contained on their hard disk drives. This is not just Fortune 500 companies that need to be concerned about data destruction. This concerns expands about that data itself while in use but even once a drive containing all that data has completed its life-cycle inside their walls before releasing the drives or disks for resale or return from lease.

This responsibility can be challenging for many companies to accomplish securely, thoroughly and quickly. What is complicating the process is most companies are not aware of the options available to them and even fewer have the necessary hardware and software to accomplish this task. As a solution to the increased responsibility and lack of internal know-how and tools, companies are looking to outsource this service.

One solution is to hire a company to provide on-site data erasure or hard drive destruction service to the client. This is a viable solution whether its loose hard drives, storage towers full of drives, or laptops and desktops with hard drives inside. An experienced company that can certify data destruction will bring with them all the tools they need – whether its a software or hardware solution to accomplish the task. This data destruction service should offer to provide you with written documentation specific to each drive’s serial number that certifies each drive is clean of data.

If you require erasure of hard drives comprising a storage tower or storage shelves, one piece of equipment you might see would be an appliance that enables direct connection to the shelves in a storage tower. This allows the user access to the drives contained in these shelves where each drive can then be erased without removal of the hard drive from the tower. Most towers can be erased in one business day.

And there are some companies who have batches of loose hard drives stored away, waiting to be erased. A similar piece of equipment is an appliance that can erase any type of loose drive (SCSI, FC, SATA, IDE, SAS) in multiple batches at a time.

Erasure of drives in storage towers is far from the only situation with which these companies need data erasure solutions. Another is the batches of laptops and desktops that require data sanitization before they are donated or returned at the end of lease. By setting up a local sub-net, large batches of these assets (as many as 200) can be erased simultaneously. By again being able to certify the data destruction, the value of those laptops and desktops is increased.

So whether your company has hard disk drives in storage towers, laptops and desktops, or just loose hard drives of any type, there are viable cost-effective solutions that can provide an on-site service to give your company the protection it requires and the peace of mind to know that all its data risks are addressed and eliminated.

Security Threat Mitigation and Response: Understanding Cisco Security MARS

Security Threat Mitigation and Response: Understanding Cisco Security MARS

The Cisco MARS (Monitoring, Analysis, and Response System) is a network appliance that fits on your network to provide the best possible network security.

The biggest failure with MARS is that many companies plug it in, use it’s standard protocols and tests and then find that their network has been compromised.

To get the most effective use out of MARS it must be actively managed. And that is the function of this book. It covers how to understand the problem, how to configure and deploy your MARS appliance as well as how the MARS works from a technical and procedural standpoint. The book is intended for professional security/network/management engineers/analysts/responders/administrators. It can be read at a level of using it to understand your system up to the actual hands-on set-up and use of the MARS appliance.

This book is, of course, heavily oriented to the Cisco security approach, however as this is one of the most common systems used in large networks this is not bad. It is a fairly introductory level book intended for use at an operational level by the individuals in charge of your sizes.

Security Threat Mitigation and Response: Understanding Cisco Security MARS Feature

Security Threat Mitigation and Response: Understanding Cisco Security MARS Overview

Identify, manage, and counter security threats with the Cisco Security Monitoring, Analysis, and Response System

Dale Tesch

Greg Abelar

While it is commonly understood that deploying network security devices is critical to the well-being of an organization’s systems and data, all too often companies assume that simply having these devices is enough to maintain the integrity of network resources. To really provide effective protection for their networks, organizations need to take the next step by closely examining network infrastructure, host, application, and security events to determine if an attack has exploited devices on their networks.

Cisco® Security Monitoring, Analysis, and Response System (Cisco Security MARS) complements network and security infrastructure investment by delivering a security command and control solution that is easy to deploy, easy to use, and cost-effective. Cisco Security MARS fortifies deployed network devices and security countermeasures, empowering you to readily identify, manage, and eliminate network attacks and maintain compliance.

Security Threat Mitigation and Response helps you understand this powerful new security paradigm that reduces your security risks and helps you comply with new data privacy standards. This book clearly presents the advantages of moving from a security reporting system to an all-inclusive security and network threat recognition and mitigation system. You will learn how Cisco Security MARS works, what the potential return on investment is for deploying Cisco Security MARS, and how to set up and configure Cisco Security MARS in your network.

“Dealing with gigantic amounts of disparate data is the next big challenge in computer security; if you’re a Cisco Security MARS user, this book is what you’ve been looking for.”

–Marcus J. Ranum, Chief of Security, Tenable Security, Inc.
